Beatrice Omutoko was our librarian during the interviews. All students borrow their school books at the start of each year, and Beatrice organised these loans. She also arrived in plenty of time each morning to help put out the desks and chairs, ready for the day.
Beatrice’s dad died in the hospital after a long, and to her, unknown illness. Her mum expelled her from home after her grandmother put a magic spell on her mother in 2010. Beatrice was shunted temporarily to her uncle’s and then found shelter at Harambee House when not at Bunyore Girl’s boarding school on scholarship. Beatrice say she prays for her mother, for her mental health.
She has just graduated and presently shares a room in town with her school colleague Sarah. It’s rented for them by Colleen, a Harambee agent, who may also help with university fees should they make the grades. She wants to study business management.
