Abel’s Son Gilbert

Portrait taken in Arusha, Tanzania by Abel Peter, a Driver with the World Food Programme.  A portrait of his son Gilbert who is 21 and finishing school with plans to continue studies at university.

A father has taken this tender portrait of his son.  A father who works diligently so his son can get an education at a boarding school in Monduli, a town near Arusha.

This is a hopeful portrait, one of Tanzania’s future, and as full of love and, yes, beauty and hope as any father might have for his son.

Before applying as volunteer with CUSO Int’l I read African literature and I learned that there are many such as Abel and his son Gilbert, people who lead lives much as mine, ones that are active, positive, constructive, contributing lives, ones with direction and hope.  I came to Africa, to Tanzania and I find in this photo, truth as portrayed in its literature.
